Winner of 5 Tony Awards (including Best Book and Best Original Score), The Drowsy Chaperone is a loving send-up of the jazz age musical, featuring one show-stopping song and dance number after another.
In an attempt to pull himself out of some non-specific sadness, Man in Chair, a die-hard musical comedy enthusiast, whips out a record of the (fictional) 1928 smash-hit musical The Drowsy Chaperone and it vividly comes to life in his apartment. Imagine your favourite ‘Great Gatsby’ scene - add some singing and dancing, a lie here, a lie there — and bam, you’ve got yourself The Drowsy Chaperone. Mix in two lovers on the eve of their wedding, a bumbling best man, a desperate theatre producer, a not so bright hostess, two gangsters posing as pastry chefs, a misguided Don Juan, an aviatrix and a “drowsy” chaperone and if vintage madcap comedy with plenty of singing and dancing is your idea of entertainment, this show delivers!
The show is performed by professionally trained musical theatre students from BIGLITTLE Theatre School’s Professional Development Programme, directed by Susan Raasay, with choreography by Emma Woods and musical direction by Colin Billing.
